The Spin Summit
Mihály Csíkszentmihályi describes the mental state of flow as “being completely involved in an
activity for its own sake. The ego falls away. Time flies. Every action, movement, and thought follows inevitably from the previous one, like playing jazz. Your whole being is involved, and you’re using your skills to the utmost.”

Cubify 3D printer now on pre-order, will ship May 25th for $1,299

I’m really interested to see how quickly 3d printing accelerates when this and other non-hobbyist models come out and people learn how to design for them. Yay technology!

I got to play with glow poi last night!

Tue, 05/15/2012 - 12:58

They were pretty cool color-changing LED sticks, kind of looked like clear plastic crystals. My boyfriend and I took one look at them and decided we are going to print them on our Reprap! We already have natural-colored plastic and are experimenting with LED circuitry, so why not? I would love to fill my entire etsy shop with flow arts and glow toys~! Building LED hoops is a bit more difficult because everything has to come together solidly for the hoop to be effective: right lights, right tube, right power source, right recharge situation, right switch and connection… it’s a big hassle. But poi are just a ball on a string, essentially.

Okay, so, the spinning: It went better than the last time I played with sock poi, so I was impressed with myself. I owe it to using twin hoops, most definitely. Not that I am that great or anything: I hit myself in the face a few times, sent one flying over to the DJ’s turntable (whoops), and smacked myself on the rear so loudly that everyone was looking around like “what was that?” BUT I can weave forwards and backwards, and confirmed to myself that I am capable of different beats and dancing more than just standing there being a metronome. Threading the needle and weaving are a lot easier with poi than hoops because you don’t have to think about how you are gripping the hoop, you just hold on to the loop. If that makes sense. Anyway, it was really fun, and I want to build my own soooooon! I love my local spinners! So friendly and funky fresh.
